First joint port control for Afghanistan

Afghan Customs inaugurated the first Joint Port Control Unit (JPCU) as part of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime-World Customs Organisation Container Control Programme (CCP) on 10 December. The office is located in the premises of the Afghanistan Customs Department in Kabul and has the latest IT systems, including a multilingual communication platform.

The US-funded Container Control Programme is a global initiative to create inter-agency ‘Joint Port Control Units’ to profile high risk containers. All members of the Kabul JPCU have completed a WCO training workshop in Azerbaijan, and participated in practical exercises at the Afghanistan National Customs Academy in November.

The plan now to set up more units on the Uzbekistan border at Hairatan/Mazar-e-Sharif, Shirkhan Bandar (Tajikistan border) and in Jalalabad/Torkham (Pakistan).
