Liverpool is the new steel city
[ November 4, 2011 // Chris ]The Port of Liverpool said its steel volumes increased 75% year on year in 2011. In the year to date the Port has brought in 250,144 tonnes of steel compared with 142,633 tonnes of steel for the same period in 2010. Volumes are expected to hit 300,000 tonnes by the end of 2011, an increase of 113,000 tonnes from 2010. .
Owners Peel Ports has spent around £1.5m on infrastructure, including a new Liebherr harbour mobile crane. It has also appointed a business development manager for metals, Roy Merryweather, who has more than a decade of experience in the industry.
Highlights of the year included a new record for steel coil handled and discharged – 33,000 tonnes from the MV Blackbird.
Roy Merryweather, added: “We are encouraging owners of cargo bound for the Northwest and Midlands to bring it in via Liverpool to enjoy the lowest onward cost and these figures show that businesses are receptive to that offering.”
He added that the growth has not only been in bulk shipments, but also in containers and the port has invested in additional handling equipment for de-stuffing.
