Hapag Lloyd sees jump in dangerous goods detections

Hapag-Lloyd says its Watchdog programme registered 65% more incorrectly declared dangerous goods last year compared to 2014. The program developed jointly by Hapag-Lloyd’s IT and dangerous goods experts identified 4,314 incorrectly declared dangerous goods cases last year compared with the previous year’s 2,620 cases.

Hapag-Lloyd’s dangerous goods experts looked into more than 236,000 suspicious cases picked up by the safety software in 2015, 46% more than in 2014.

The head of the shipping line’s dangerous goods department, For Ken Rohlmann, said the sharp increase was partly because the volume of cargo shipped by Hapag-Lloyd increased considerably last year due to the merger with CSAV but also because many ports drastically tightened their dangerous goods guidelines in the wake of the explosion in the port of Tianjin in mid-August.
