More than just sunlight needed to get solar plane around the world

Aircraft charter firm Chapman Freeborn and specialist heavylift airline Volga-Dnepr played a key part in the recent success of Solar Impulse 2’

s historic mission to become the first solar-powered aircraft to circumnavigate the globe.

The two partners provided comprehensive logistical assistance including cargo and passenger chartered aircraft to transport spare parts, a mobile hangar and the technical team to support the record-breaking round-the-world trip which started in March 2015. The aircraft landed back in Abu Dhabi on 26 July after completing 23 days of flight and covering a distance of 43,041km over the course of its 17-leg journey.

Chapman Freeborn’s Wings 24 in-house flight support team also arranged flight permits and customs clearances, ground handling and immigration arrangements.

Volga-Dnepr also ensured that one of its IL-76TD-90VD freighters was on standby ready to support Solar Impulse 2 at short notice.
