Fish, birds and boxes

As well as opening the UK’s newest box port, DP World London Gateway has also found time to turn a space equivalent to 82 football pitches into a nature reserve near its Thameside site. It has created 65 hectares of important intertidal habitat, which will provide feeding ground for wading birds and fish, and six hectares of saltmarsh. The Salt Fleet Flats Reserve- so-named after a vote by the public and members of the local community – is on the south bank of the River Thames, just north of Cooling in Kent and to the south east of London Gateway port.

DP World the habitat to compensate for habitat that was predicted would be lost during construction and says it has handsomely exceeded the target set, by 12 hectares – in addition to the Stanford Wharf Nature Reserve, on the north bank of the Thames, created in 2010.
