Southampton plan triggers storm

[ November 7, 2016   //   ]

ABP chief executive James Cooper has triggered a local storm after he suggested that the controversial Dibden Bay container port expansion plan could be revitalised.

The scheme to develop the opposite side of Southampton Water to the existing port for commercial use was thrown out by the government 12 years ago on the grounds of environmental damage, but during a recent visit by Chancellor Phillip Hammond, the ABP boss revealed that the port was seeking to reinstate the scheme in order to expand its activity.

According to press reports, ABP’s stance appeared to have the Chancellor’s endorsement.

New Forest Conservative MP Julian Lewis has already written to the Chancellor deploring the suggestion.
