Two more giant ferries for DFDS

[ June 16, 2017   //   ]

DFDS has ordered a further two new 6,700 lane metre freight ro ro ships, in addition to the two similar vessels already under construction at the Jinling shipward in China.

Like their sister ships, they will have space for 450 trailers each, making them DFDS’ biggest ever ships, and are due to be delivered by 2020. The two previously ordered ships are due to be delivered by 2019.

All four vessels will go into service on DFDS’s North Sea routes.

The ships, like their sister ships, are the first DFDS-owned vessels built according to the new IMO EEDI (Energy Efficiency Design Index) regulations, which set significantly lower limits for energy consumption and emissions in relation to the ship’s capacity and engine power. Energy consumption and emissions are cut by more than 25% per transported trailer compared to current standards.

The ships are also being built with a scrubber and equipped with a ballast water treatment system

They will also be equipped with a unique ramp system with three independent stern ramps and internal ramps on each side in the ships, to speed loading and unloading.

The order for the four Jinling ships is in addition to two 4,076lm ships being built in Flensburg, the first of which was delivered from the German yard in February for DFDS’s  Rotterdam-Immingham route.
