Monarch goes into administration – updated

Monarch Airlines went into administration and ceased trading on 2 October, stranding around 110,000 British passengers overseas.

The carrier blamed recent terror attacks in Turkey and Egypt which have hit its business to those countries badly, along with intense completion on other short-haul routes within Europe, the weak Pound and rising operating costs.

The Civil Aviation Authority chartered over 30 planes to bring them back to the UK. In the largest ever operation of its kind in peacetime.

KPMG has meanwhile been appointed joint administrators to Monarch Airlines.

Monarch carried cargo in the bellyholds of its passenger planes, marketed by Colnbrook-based Airline Cargo Management Limited (ACM).

A BBC report quoted Monarch chief executive Andrew Swaffield saying that UK insolvency rules to not allow airlines to continue operating while they are in administration, unlike the recent cases of Air Berlin and Alitalia who continued flying while they were in administration.
