Striking drivers ‘face death penalty’ in Iran
[ October 3, 2018 // Chris ]The International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) said on 2 October that it was concerned about the Iranian government’s reaction to a strike by truck drivers, which is in its second week. About 150 drivers have have reportedly been arrested and a spokesperson for the judiciary has threatened “heavy punishment.” The ITF understands that Iran’s attorney general, Mohammad Jaafar Montazeri, has suggested that those who initiated the protest actions will be subject to the death penalty, citing a threat to national security. His comments have been echoed by other clerics. Drivers have been protesting about low and unpaid wages and rising costs. Social media shows hundreds of trucks parked in major cities.
