ABC deal propels Liege into the big time
[ October 10, 2018 // Chris ]Russia’s AirBridgeCargo Airlines has signed a ten-year lease agreement with Belgian hub Liege Airport, following the memorandum of understanding announced at the Farnborough International Airshow in July. Under the new deal AirBridgeCargo will lease 25,000sq m of warehousing and is expected to make Liege one of the top five cargo airports in Europe by 2020.
The project will be divided into two phases, the first to be launched in June 2019 with a 12,500sq m warehouse. The second will follow in early 2020. At the same time, the Walloon Airports Company is building four new aircraft stands to accommodate the AirBridgeCargo fleet.
Liege Airport chief executive Luc Partoune said the agreement would take the airport into a new dimension: “We welcomed the first flights in October 2017 because AirBridgeCargo had to reduce its presence in Amsterdam. Then we responded to their call for tenders launched earlier this year for the creation of their European hub…Thanks to AirBridgeCargo, we plan to reach one million tonnes by 2020 and become one of the top five cargo airports in Europe.”
