Common Transit Convention will help speed UK exports, say FTA and FTAI
[ December 19, 2018 // Chris ]The Freight Transport Association (FTA) and FTA Ireland have welcome the EU’s invitation to the UK to join its Common Transit Convention (CTC) in its own right, something the associations have been pressing for some time.
In the event of no deal, traders would use CTC to temporarily suspend payment of duties and taxes, and to postpone customs clearance formalities until the goods reach their destination, rather than at the point of entry into the customs territory, which will be particularly attractive for UK businesses exporting into the EU.
While it would not remove the need for regulatory border checks such as sanitary & phytosanitary checks, the CTC would reduce fiscal checks upon entry into the EU.
FTA said it was now vital for UK business to make all necessary arrangements for use of the convention ready for 30 March.
