Union steps up pressure on parcels firms

The International Transport Workers Federation has relaunched it joint action with the International Trade Union Confederation on worker conditions at DHL ahead of the release of the freight giant’s financial results on 8 March, including a new website, Respect at DHL (www.respectatdhl.org). The unions want DHL to guarantee the same basic rights to all its workers, wherever they are.

ITF general secretary David Cockroft is also supporting a strike by South African union SATAWU over the increasing use of ‘labour brokers’. He said: “The big players such as DHL, UPS, TNT and FedEx make their immense profits on the back of a two tier workforce where a growing group are not directly employed by the company. These workers work with lower pay, inadequate occupational health and safety standards, a lack of job security as compared with their permanently employed counterparts.”
