Geodis plans regular China-Europe ships

Freight forwarder Geodis says it will expand its ad hoc chartering of vessels to move containers from the Far East to Europe into a semi-regular operation.

Senior vice president global ocean freight, Matthias Hansen, said that, with no sign that the market disruption that has plagued liner services throughout the year would ease before Chinese New Year, it had chartered several multipurpose vessels from Shanghai to Hamburg and to multiple ports in the US and Canada to offer additional freight capacity.

In August, this had been expanded into a monthly charter connecting Shanghai and Hamburg which was planned to run until the beginning of next year, with 1,000teu capacity per sailing.

Hansen explained: “This will allow our customers to plan their flow of goods for Christmas and the first quarter of 2022 and rely on a regular schedule instead of ad hoc ‘extra-loaders’.”

Geodis started operating one-off charters of multipurpose vessels carrying containers with two sailings in February followed up by two more over the summer from Asia to the US.
