US ports disruption: It’s not over yet says FourKites

The Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles have gone a very busy, disrupted summer to “an uncontrollable Autumn”, says visibility specialist FourKites.

Berthing times slowly increased to 1-3 day averages, with ebbs and flows week to week but then spiked to up to 10 days in September. 

According to FourKites’ data, there has however been a recent decline in berthing time at Long Beach from six days in the week beginning 4 October to one day during the week beginning 11 October.
The adjacent port of Los Angeles, where berthing time reached seven days in the week beginning 20 September saw berthing time reduce to one day in the week beginning 11 October.

Berthing time at the port of Seattle were under a day.

FourKites added that there had been some shift away from west coast to east coast ports

However, FourKites’ vice president of products Chris Stauber warned that while ports, dray carriers and shippers had worked to resolve the issues “the problem is not yet resolved”, adding: “We expect to continue to see bottlenecks at these ports for months to come. Moreover, there continues to be variability in the berthing times. This can occur due to a combination of vessel size, equipment availability and other resource availability.”
