Long Beach in line for 9m teu record
[ December 10, 2021 // Chris ]The Port of Long Beach says it is on the verge of processing a record 9 million cargo containers by the end of 2021. Dockworkers and terminal operators had moved more than 8.6 million teus by the end of November, already surpassing the current annual record of 8.1 million teu, set in 2020.
The port reported that there are currently 34 container vessels at anchor waiting to enter the San Pedro Bay ports complex, down from more than 80 last month, due to a new queuing process implemented in November.
A container dwell fee was announced on 25 october whereby ocean carriers would be charged for containers that remain too long on the quayside. Since then, the fee has been postponed amid a 37% decline in ‘aging’ cargo in San Pedro Bay terminals. The nearby Port of Los Angeles also adopted and postponed the fee.
