DHL opens Shanghai superhub
[ July 13, 2012 // Chris ]DHL Express opened its US$175 million North Asia Hub at Shanghai Pudong International Airport on 12 July, its biggest in Asia. It also announced plans to further invest US$132 million (in an additional eight dedicated aircraft to service high demand routes between Shanghai and North Asia, Europe and the US, by 2014. The flights will be operated by partner and equity-held airlines Polar Air, Aerologic, and DHL Air UK and other providers.
The North Asia Hub will allow shorter routings for customers shipping within North Asia and could ultimately result in savings of up to four hours airtime, later pick-ups and earlier deliveries.
With a land area of 88,000sq m (13 football pitches), DHL Express’ North Asia Hub can process up to 20,000 documents and 20,000 parcels an hour. Environmentally-friendly features include energy efficient T5 lighting and a solar-powered system for hot water. The hub’s sortation system is also designed to automatically detect components that are not in use and switches them to an energy-saving ‘sleep’ mode.
