Shipping line ONE has wind in its sails
[ November 23, 2023 // Chris Lewis ]Ocean Network Express (ONE) and Dutch maritime wind-powered technology expert Econowind are to test two VentoFoil container-mounted wind assist devices on an intra-Asian feeder ship. The VentoFoils, which resemble airplane wings harness wind energy and significantly reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, say the partners.
The VentoFoils have a smart suction system that optimize airflow and maximize thrust, and has the potential to generate up to 400kW of power, reducing fuel consumption by 5%. They are fully automatic, adjust for wind speed and direction, and can be started from the ship bridge. They are being installed on the MV Kalamazoo, a 1,036teu vessel that operates between Pusan, Yokohama, and Honolulu.
The trial is scheduled to begin in January 2024 and run for approximately six months. The results will be used to assess the long-term viability of wind propulsion as a sustainable shipping solution.
