Italian Rail signs Amazon deal
[ April 5, 2024 // Chris Lewis ]The Italian Railways’ (FS) Mercitalia Logistics arm has signed a deal with Amazon to transport goods between Amazon fulfilment centres in Germany and Italy.
As well as reducing emissions and congestion, the project will also help Amazon optimize inventory handling and reduce delivery times, say the partners. FS Group’s schedule includes three trains per week from Duisburg to Pomezia, operated by Mercitalia Intermodal, and six round trips between Herne and Verona, operated by TX Logistik. FS Group says that these routes, working at full capacity, could help avoid up to 9,000 tons of carbon emissions from international road freight traffic per year.
In March, Berlin-based digital freight forwarder Sennder signed a partnership with Mercitalia Logistics to integrate their rail and road operations.
