Gothenburg on course for new box record in 2024

[ August 27, 2024   //   ]

The Port of Gothenburg says it is on course to achieve another all-time high year for container volumes in 2024, following its record year in 2023.

The first half of 2024 saw a 5% increase in container volumes, reaching 467,000 TEU, with the upward trend in import volumes observed during the first quarter continuing.

The second quarter of 2024 was also the 15th consecutive quarter of growth in total container volumes.

Vice president of sales, Claes Sundmark, said: “The signals we received from the market earlier this year regarding increased purchasing power and demand have proven to be accurate. Export volumes are also continuing to rise, partly due to the Swedish forest industry expanding its exports via the Port of Gothenburg.”

The number of containers transported to and from the port by rail also rose 6% over the first half of the year – a combination of growing volumes at existing terminals along with the addition of several new destinations to the port’s rail network.

However, Gothenburg’s intra-European ro ro traffic decreased by 4% to 270,000 units during the first half of the year, attributed to continued uncertainty in the European economy, and a decrease in car imports into Sweden.
