Insurers publish guide to flexitank success
[ October 10, 2024 // Chris Lewis ]The International Union of Marine Insurance (IUMI) has published a best practice guide for the safe use of flexible tanks with practical guidance to ensure cargoes arrive intact. Flexible tanks – or flexitanks – are polyfilm bladders filled with liquid cargo and then placed into a standard IOS container for transportation. Their usehas grown significantly mainly due to reduced costs compared with a tank container but if not correctly managed are prone to damage. Once a flexitank is ruptured cargo loss is usually total. The paper outlines a range of potential risks including poor stowage, incorrect installation, overloading, material deficiencies, transport issues and others, along with recommendations for safe use and carriage
