No need to fear the meatball, says Stena Line

Half of the meat in one of the ferry operator’s most popular dishes on board its vessels will be replaced next year with a plant-based mince made from yellow peas.
“We want to show our passengers that this is nothing to be afraid of. It is still a delicious and classic home-cooked dish with creamy mashed potatoes, lingonberries, and gravy. All the flavours are there, and it would be difficult, if not impossible, to notice any difference in a blind test,” he explains.
The change means that Stena will use 35 tons less animal protein a year, slashing the resulting carbon emissions from 4.9kg to 1.3kg per portion.
Stena Line’s press release describes it, we must say a tad unenthusiastically, as: “A huge change that will hopefully go unnoticed.”
We will have to wait a few weeks before deciding. The new meatballs go onto the menu on all ships from 13 February next year.
