It’s ‘C’ for crossing, says Dover

The Port of Dover is calling for option ‘C’ for the Lower Thames Crossing consultation, saying that to will do most to improve the north-south movement of trade from the Channel ports to destinations north of London. Option C is the easternmost and longest of the three options being considered, but it also would bypass a congested section of the M25 and provide a shortcut for traffic heading north. The other two options would link only to existing ‘A roads.

The port points out that while the economic climate has affected Dover’s figures in the past couple of years, the long term forecast is still for significant growth in the freight ro-ro sector – and business on the cross-Channel routes may well increase if new sulphur emissions rules for shipping lead to a modal shift from ships to road from 2015. This could result in more traffic trying to cross at Dartford in order to get the shorter ferry crossings.
The port also wants dualling of the small remaining single carriageway section of the A2 between Lydden and Dover which, together with the Option C Thames crossing, would allow traffic to avoid the M25.
