DHL to double up in Leipzig

DHL Express will double the area of its main European hub in Leipzig, Germany. A €150 million scheme – bringing DHL’s total investment in its Leipzig hub to date to over €510m – will add around 40 000m² of additional warehousing and offices and a new shipment sorting system will increase processing capacity by 50%, to over 150 000 shipments per hour. Work will begin in December 2013 and the expanded warehouse should be operational from the fourth quarter of 2014. The expansion will also create 400 more jobs will be created by the expansion. As part of DHL’s GoGreen program, the facility will also incorporate green technologies, reinforcing the company’s stated commitment to environmental sustainability in its operations.

There will be a parallel investment in DHL’s other hubs and sub-hubs around the world, including London Heathrow, where space has been doubled and a new area is currently being iftted out. Modernisation of the East Midlands facility is also being considered.

An extra sorting building and ramp capacity has been added at the main US hub in Cincinnati and a large new hub recently opened at Shanghai is expected to take the pressure off the main Asian hub at Hong Kong, which is currently nearly full.
