Afghanistan: the big shift is underway
[ January 29, 2014 // Chris ]Nato estimates that about 218,000 vehicles and containers of military equipment need to be shipped out of Afghanistan by the December 2014 troop withdrawal date, according to a report on the BBC News website (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-south-asia-25848662).The figure includes 5,500 containers and 3,345 vehicles for UK forces and 20,000 containers and 24,000 for the US.
Routings include the road route through Pakistan to Karachi port, which however has been subject to delays and closures. Another option is by road and rail to either the Black Sea or to Latvia, although a defence expert was quoted as saying that the amount of equipment shipped this way was a fraction of that which had been hoped.
