African shipping ‘must be more competitive’ says minister
[ April 16, 2013 // Chris ]Nigeria’s transport minister, Senator Idris Umar called for more competition in African trades at annual meeting of the Global Shippers’ Forum in London on 8 April. He said Nigeria fully backed GSF’s global maritime regulatory reform campaign, drawing attention to the lack of competition in many African trades and the plethora of surcharges and other practices which blunted the competitiveness of African trade and the prospects for much needed growth.
He also described the GSF as “very necessary for protecting and advancing the cause of the shipper in global trade” and it was essential that it was accorded full UN accreditation status with key international organisations such as the International Maritime Organisation.
