Airfreight vital to exports, says FTA
[ June 26, 2015 // Chris ]The Freight Transport Association (FTA) says the independent Cole Commission on Exports report released on 24 June echoes its own findings that Heathrow must increase capacity to be competitive in air freight. The report says sufficient export capacity is “critical” if the UK is to win the race for jobs and growth. Current constraints on Heathrow could see Schiphol handling twice as much freight by 2030.
FTA commissioned its own report – Sky High Value – The importance of air freight to the UK economy – to reflect its contribution to the Airport Commission’s investigations into London airport capacity and to specifically look at the issue of air freight rather than passenger and business travel.
It also commissioned a more detailed study – the York Aviation Report – which again confirmed Heathrow as a critical hub for air cargo and underlined that a failure to invest in new runway capacity would result in a loss of connectivity and transfer of services to competitor airports on the continent.
