Amazon muscles into NVOCC market
[ January 15, 2016 // Chris ]Online retail giant Amazon has further extended its reach into the supply chain, with the news that it has obtained an NVOCC licence from the US Federal Maritime Commission. Although the licence would theoretically allow Amazon to offer its services to third parties, the retailer is expected to use its status to fulfil its own requirements., principally on the US to China trade lane.
Amazon has already made a foray into the airfreight market. It is reportedly negotiating a lease on 20 freight aircraft from the US market and during Christmas chartered its own aircvraft between Asia, the UK and Europe.
Senior vice president B2B operations at supply chain expert Kewill:, from Sian Hopwood, se commented: “By removing the middleman, retailers can reduce costs and provide customers with an always-on, always-available shopping experience which traditional models can’t sustain.”
