Brussels to probe Etihad airline stakes
[ May 6, 2014 // Chris ]The European Commission’s DG Transport is to hold a preliminary inquiry into Etihad’s purchase of stakes in European airlines to see if they breach EU rules on ownership and control of European companies. The Abu Dhabi-based carrier has already taken stakes in Air Berlin and is in the processing of buying part of Italian flag-carrier Alitalia.
The Commission has asked the German authorities for information on the control and influence of Etihad on Air Berlin, the second German airline in which Etihad has a 29.2% stake and is also monitoring the Middle East carrier’s purchase of 33% of Swiss-based Darwin Airlines.
