Calais nearly back to normal, say ferrymen

[ March 7, 2019   //   ]

A work-to-rule by French customs officers that led to queues of lorries on roads leading to the French Channel has ended, say cross-Channel ferry operators. A spokesman for P&O Ferries said on Thursday 7 March that only 300 trucks were now in the overflow area at the port of Calais, adding that the contingency arrangements in the port had worked well.
Eurotunnel also said that the situation was improving.
Officers had been imposing more checks on trucks as part of a protest aimed at securing better pay and conditions, leading to huge jams on the approaches to Calais port, the Channel Tunnel and Dunkerques with trucks queued up for several miles. Freight operators reported that officials were checking every freight vehicle.
