Calais trucks stage recovery
[ January 22, 2018 // Chris ]Cross-Channel truck traffic continued the recovery that started in 2016 last year following the dismantling of the ‘Jungle’ migrant camp, said the port of Boulogne Calais. With a record 1.99 million vehicles transported, heavy goods vehicle traffic increased by 4.25% in 2017. However, market share has not yet returned to its pre-crisis level with 47% in 2017 against nearly 50% before 2015.
Unaccompanied trailer traffic is continuing to grow, up by 9.8% in 2017 to 41,339 units supported in part by the restart, last February, of the VIIA Britanica rail motorway linking Calais with Le Boulou on the French-Spanish border. VIIA plans to increase the frequency of its trains and develop the Calais terminal by the end of January.
