Canal defence makes the grade
[ February 9, 2021 // Chris ]The wisdom of a recent upgrade of water management and maintenance on the Manchester Ship Canal was borne out during Storm Christoph in January, said owner Peel Ports. Upgrades to the canal’s sluices now ensure that the sliding gates are capable of controlling varied and potentially dramatic increases in water flow during severe weather conditions. The upgraded defences were able to cope with the equivalent of 40,000 Olympic swimming pools of water passing through the Weaver sluices in just 48 hours, ensuring the safety of vessels and residents, it said.
