Commission set to extend Ukraine road deal
[ March 11, 2024 // Chris Lewis ]The European Commission says it plans extend its road transport agreements with Ukraine and Moldova while updating that with Ukraine.
The original agreements, signed in June 2022 and later extended until end of June 2024 give bilateral transport rights to Ukrainian, Moldovan and EU hauliers in each other’s territories. The Commission says that with normal transport routes in the region disrupted or closed due to Russian’s war against Ukraine and the unavailability of the Black Sea. prolongation until at least the end of 2025 will help secure supply chains.
However, it will make it obligatory to carry documents showing that transport operators are authorised to perform international carriage, and that the transport is being carried out under the Agreement. It new clause also allows the agreement to be suspended should national road transport markets in specific areas be disrupted.
This follows protests by Polish hauliers over undercutting by Ukraine-based operators in their domestic market.
