DFDS makes another Irish acquisition

[ January 3, 2023   //   ]

Danish logistics operator DFDS has entered into an agreement to acquire 100% of Ulster-based McBurney Transport Group, its second acquisition on the island of Ireland in six months.

Ballymena-headquartered McBurney’s core activity is the transport of around 100,000 full and part-load trailers between Ireland and the UK by road and ferry, most of them temperature-controlled units. It operates from eight different locations, three in Northern Ireland, one in Ireland, three in England and one in Scotland including a 25,000-pallet cold store in Liverpool. It also owns a 10,000 m2 ambient warehouse in Northern Ireland as Bondelivery focused on fulfilment for the retail sector and last mile delivery on the island of Ireland.

In July 2022, DFDS DFDS signed a deal to acquire 100% of the capital of Dublin-based Lucey Transport Logistics including its trucking operations and 400 trailers.

DFDS said that the acquisition of McBurney Transport Group was aligned with its strategic focus on cold chain logistics, overlapingwith existing activities in the region, and offering opportunities to connect with other parts of DFDS’ pan-European transport network.

Chief executive Torben Carlsen commented: “The acquisition of McBurney Transport Group greatly enhances the scope of our customer offerings on the island of Ireland and in the UK, particularly towards the resilient food sector. It also brings considerable scale to our existing operations in the region.”

McBurney Transport Group founder Norman McBurney, added: “By becoming part of DFDS we gain access to new development opportunities. I am certain the wider market coverage, including access to DFDS’ extensive transport network, will benefit our many longstanding customers. I am confident that our many loyal and dedicated employees will be comfortable and happy after this transaction.”
