DHL launches high tech life sciences service
[ June 11, 2013 // Chris ]DHL has launched DHL Thermonet, a new temperature controlled Life Sciences air freight service. This new addition to DHL’s network of Life Sciences and Healthcare facilities offers a transparent and a regulatory compliant platform. It provides higher visibility with proactive monitoring and intervention 24 hours a day, 365 days a year through SmartSensor RFID technology that has been developed in-house by DHL’s Solutions & Innovation division. The SmartSensor monitors the ambient temperature of the shipment while in transit, with the data uploaded automatically to the LifeTrack IT platform via a web portal. It also simplifies and automates document control.
DHL’s president of life sciences and healthcare customer solutions and innovation, Angelos Orfanos, explains: “Life sciences and healthcare demand a higher level of service compliance.”
Temperature-sensitive products currently make up a quarter of global pharmaceutical sales and, with the increasing shift of new products from chemical-based to biotech and specialty drugs, growth of this segment is expected to accelerate.
DHL Global Forwarding is currently focusing on its base of over 30 life sciences competence centres around the globe, where it is implementing the DHL Thermonet standard. The service will continue to be rolled out in 2014, targeting 60 stations by the end of the year. Further network expansion is planned.
