Drop trailers keep Calais buoyant
[ January 30, 2023 // Chris Lewis ]A slight decline in accompanied truck traffic was largely offset by a remarkable performance in unaccompanied freight in 2022, said Port Boulogne Calais in its annual report. Accompanied heavy goods vehicle traffic fell 2% to 1.6m units compared to 2021, with the P&O Ferries dispute in the spring causing a major lack of cargo space. Unaccompanied trailers however set a new record for this type of traffic in the port with 62,515 trailers compared with 38,678 in 2021, an increase of 62%. Around two thirds of the total moved on the new Calais / Sheerness service launched by DFDS in summer 2021. May 2022 also saw introduction of a new rail motorway line between Calais and the port of Sète operated by the French railways VIIA subsidiary, transporting trailers from Turkey. More than 42 000 trailers travelled on VIIA trains to or from the Port of Calais.
