Dublin and partners push the port safety message
[ September 5, 2023 // Chris Lewis ]Dublin Port Company has got together with seven terminal operators, the Gardaí (Irish Police Force), the Health & Safety Executive and in a new safety campaign.
The ten SafePort Golden Rules aim to engage with employees and visitors in the safest possible manner on Dublin Port sites. Publication follows introduction of 40km road speed limits within the port in October 2022.
The seven founding terminal operators are Dublin Ferryport Terminals, Doyle Shipping Group, Irish Ferries, P&O Ferries, Peel Ports Group (MTL), Seatruck Ferries and Stena Line who account for around 75% of port workers on the estate.
The 10 Golden Rules include: turn up fit for work and unimpaired by drugs and alcohol; be aware of lifting operations and moving machinery; wear a personal flotation device within 1.5m of the quay wall; and use mobile devices only as approved and avoid distractions.
Dublin Port harbourmaster, Michael McKenna, emphasised: “SafePort does not belong in a meeting room on Power Point presentations – it must be in operation across the port estate and be in people’s minds as they go about their business.”
Superintendent Jarlath Lennon of the local Store St Garda Station said the force would take an active role in implementing the rules to make Dublin Port a safer place and would be an important aspect of its mission statement of Keeping People Safe.
