Dunkerque to build rail terminal

[ January 19, 2024   //   ]

Dunkerque is to create a new piggyback terminal at its Western Port. It will offer an alternative to road for freight traffic using the ro ro services, as well as for traffic generated by existing and future industrial facilities in the region.

It will comprise a transshipment terminal for trailers and swap-bodies and will be developed by Charles André Group. Work is scheduled to begin this year on the nine-hectare site along the Loon-Plage railway, with commissioning planned for 2025.

In its annual report, Dunkerque said that overall traffic stood at 44 million tonnes in 2023, down by 10% on the previous year. This trend reflects the current economic climate while disruption in some industrial activities at the port also impacted the volumes handled.

Channel and Ireland ro ro freight showed a slight decline of 4% with 450,000 units shipped. Passenger vehicle traffic rose by 13%  but did not recover its pre-Covid levels.

After 10 years of uninterrupted growth, container activity ended the year down 10% at at 670,000teu but Dunkerque continued to gain market share in this sector.
