Electric trains take the strain for Carousel
[ September 13, 2023 // Chris Lewis ]In-night delivery specialist Carousel Logistics has joined forces with Varamis Rail to launch electric freight trains between Birmingham and Glasgow.
Following the signing of a partnership in February and a successful trial, the route is now part of Carousel Logistics’ pan-European delivery operations.
Varamis Rail is using former passenger multiple unit trains converted to carry cargo.
Managing director UK, Carousel Logistics, Andrew Lowery, said: “Not only does this high-speed electric train drive our journey toward carbon neutrality, it is also faster than the diesel-fuelled alternatives.”
The former commuter trains have a top speed of 100mph.
The trains depart from Birmingham International station, two miles from the city’s airport at midnight and arrive in Glasgow’s Mossend hub terminal at around 4am.
Varamis Rail says the electric trains will save 1,350 tonnes of carbon dioxide a year under the current schedule of a return journey between the cities five nights a week on Monday to Friday.
