Ellen sets battery ferry record

[ June 20, 2022   //   ]

The Ellen set a world distance record on 9 June for a vehicle-carrying fully electric ferry – 50 nautical miles (92 kilometres) on a single battery charge. The feat was witnessed in Sønderborg, Denmark, where leaders from industry, government, and civil society joined the International Energy Agency for the seventh Annual Global Conference on Energy Efficiency.

The Ellen operates between the islands of Ærø and Als in southern Denmark and in normal daily trips operation sails 22 nautical miles before recharging.

The vessel is powered by Danfoss’ Editron division’s electric drivetrain, which is smaller and lighter than comparable systems and offers reduced operational costs and zero emissions.

The company says that the Ellen emits no carbon and has 24% lower operating costs than a new diesel ferry.
