EU to talk Brexit at Brussels summit

[ June 28, 2018   //   ]

EU leaders are due to discuss Brexit at their summit in Brussels today (Thursday 28 June) although the talks are likely to be dominated by other issues, including the emerging migrant crisis in Europe, along with US President Trump’s trade tariffs.

The EU is expected to urge Prime Minister Theresa May to step up the pace of Brexit and to find a solution to the Irish border problem.

The Freight Transport Association meanwhile called on the negotiating teams to ensure that the UK’s departure from the European Union does not compromise or curtail trade across the Channel. Head of European policy Pauline Bastidon, said: “The priority must be to avoid the risk of a disastrous ‘no deal’ scenario, and to allow companies to plan on a firm basis by making the promise of a transition legally binding and making more progress on the future relationship. With barely nine months left before Brexit Day, time is of the essence”.

She added: “Most important of all, our industry needs longer-term clarity on its ability to recruit EU nationals in the future, and the certainty that it will be able to keep its current EU workers in employment in the UK, no matter what the final outcome of the negotiations.”
