DP World London Gateway took delivery of Europe’s largest quay cranes on 21 February. Weighing more than 2,000 tonnes, they will come into service at London Gateway’s new £350m fourth berth, set to open this summer.

The cranes are not only the largest in Europe but also have the latest automation technology and can carry out tandem lifts , of two 40ft or four 20ft boxes in a single move.

Another two quay cranes are expected to arrive in early summer and follow the arrival of the £56m automated stacking cranes and £12m electric straddle carriers for the new fourth berth.

Vice President port operations, Ahsan Agha, said: “At a time when the pressure to manage costs, maintain reliability and improve speed has never been greater, DP World in the UK has been building a unique array of assets and suite of capabilities to help our customers stay competitive in a fast changing and unpredictable trading environment.”
