First Tilbury strike for 23 years
[ May 4, 2012 // Chris ]Tilbury dockers are due to stage their first strike since 1989 on Monday 7 May in protest against new ‘follow the ship’ contracts. This means that staff work when the ships are ready for unloading, and not to set shift patterns. The 45 employees of paper terminal, Enterprise Distribution Centre staged a 24-hour strike and warned that there could be more to come. The Unite union complained that the new arrangements could reduce annual pay by around £2,500 a year and that there had been a complete lack of negotiation and consultation on the issue.
