Floods fail to deter Gregory’s guys
[ December 7, 2012 // Chris ]The team at Devon based Palletline member Gregory Distribution swung into action to keep deliveries moving during the recent floods.“The floods were unbelievable,” said Darren Beaven, Gregory Distribution depot principal. “But the way our staff handled them comes a close second.”
The Palletline network relied on its drivers to be the “eyes and ears” rather than rely on official traffic reports. Drivers remained in continuous contact throughout the floods, keeping everyone informed of road closures as soon as they were encountered. “This enabled us to chart alternative routes and save precious time for subsequent deliveries,” said Beaven.
Numerous employees went above and beyond, but especially forklift driver Andy Beaton, who abandoned his car for a bicycle. When the floods encroached, he was forced to return home to apply sandbag fortifications around his home. “But he still cycled back to work when he was finished,” said Darren.
All these efforts helped a return to normal operations within 72 hours.
And it was good to see that the County Council chipping in with some helpful signage, just in case anyone had failed to notice that their road was under three feet of water.
