Freight set to gain cheaper access to high speed rail route

[ September 30, 2024   //   ]

The Office of Rail and Road (ORR) has proposed halving charges to freight trains using  the High Speed 1 line between London and the Channel Tunnel in its Draft Determination of HS1 Ltd’s spending plans, published on 30 September.

It also suggested lower charges for passenger trains.

It said the detailed scrutiny and challenge applied to HS1 Ltd’s plans should see the costs of operating on the line reduce significantly, giving savings for both international and domestic operators over the next five years.

In response, Ellis Shelton, senior policy advisor at Logistics UK, said: that the plan was encouraging news for those businesses moving goods to and from the continent: “The use of rail freight on the HS1 route is a vital element of the UK’s trade connectivity with Europe and a key factor in encouraging trade between the continent and the UK.”
