Genesee & Wyoming’s UK rail arm Freightliner, is launching a new route between Felixstowe to Daventry from 2 October,. It will be the first rail freight service on the competitive short-haul route, it said.

Managing director – intermodal logistics, Chris Lawrenson, said: the new Daventry route would support modal shift “and help to reduce the congestion we all experience along the main A14 road”

Freightliner is also adding a new service between Southampton and Cardiff, which will allow customers to take advantage of DP World’s new modal shift programme which offers discounts on port charges for containers moved by rail instead of road.

The operator is also launching services from Grangemouth to Daventry, Southampton to Leeds, Felixstowe to Manchester, Manchester to Birmingham, Birmingham to London Gateway and Birmingham to Felixstowe.

Freightliner has also been awarded a five-year contract with The Malcolm Group to use its Daventry to Grangemouth route covering two overnight services seven days a week, moving up to 36 platforms of domestic product each way. This service benefits from a 25% increase in the volume of goods which can be moved due to lighter wagons.
