Hapag-Lloyd signs green fuel deal

[ November 28, 2024   //   ]

Hapag-Lloyd has reached an agreement with Chinese clean energy company Goldwind for the delivery of 250,000 tonnes of green methanol per year. The green methanol will consist of a blend of bio- and e-methanol, ensuring a greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction of at least 70%. The shipping line aims to reduce its absolute GHG emissions of the fleet by around one third by 2030, compared to 2022. It is converting five 10,100 TEU chartered ships to a methanol dual-fuel propulsion system, due to be completed in 2026, and recently announced an investment in 24 new container ships with low-emission dual-fuel liquefied natural gas engines. Goldwind is planning to build a new green methanol factory adjacent to its existing project in Hinggan, China, expected to be completed in late 2027.
