IAG Cargo vegs out with record asparagus shipments

[ May 13, 2021   //   ]

Nothing, not even pandemics or Brexit comes between foodies and their favourite veg –IAG Cargo said on 13 May that it had flown a record 2,361 tonnes of asparagus to the UK and Europe between January and April this year. The figure was up 86% on the 1,270 tonnes shipped in the same period in 2020.

Between the 11-19 April alone, 59.25 tonnes were shipped to London Heathrow, in time for the reopening of UK restaurants to outdoor diners on 12 April.

IAG Cargo estimates that it has shipped 26.2 million servings of asparagus to date in 2021, a large proportion of them on five charters dedicated to the vegetable.

IAG Cargo regional commercial manager for the Americas Pravin Singh attributed the surge to unseasonably cold and wet weather in Europe which led to producers in the US and Latin America stepping in to fill the gap.
