IATA and Smart Freight Center to clean up airfreight’s act
[ March 13, 2024 // Chris Lewis ]IATA has partnered with climate action non-profit organization, Smart Freight Centre (SFC), to provide better emissions calculations for air cargo.
They will develop the cargo component of IATA’s CO2 Connect emission calculation platform, already launched for passengers in 2022.
CO2 Connect uses airline specific fuel burn figures for full freighter and passenger aircraft and cargo and passenger load factors to determine emissions.
The partners will promote a common methodology for calculations and ensure that accurate, consistent figures are distributed to shippers and freight forwarders.
SFC runs a Clean Air Transport programme which has over 50 members, including airlines, forwarders, shippers and fuel providers who collaborate in support of aviation decarbonisation.
