[ March 19, 2025   //   ]

DFDS is sponsoring the first Irish sailor to compete in the Route du Rhum, Pamela Lee. The ferry operator will support her quest to compete in the world’s longest and most challenging solo transatlantic race in 2026, while at the same time inspiring more women to pursue maritime careers.

The 3,500 nautical mile route from St. Malo, France to Guadeloupe is a pinnacle of solo offshore sailing and is held just once every four years. DFDS says its two-year backing positions Pamala Lee not only as a trailblazer in Irish sport but also as a role model for aspiring female mariners worldwide.

She said: “Like every athlete, I strive to perform at the pinnacle of my sport and the Route du Rhum is often referred to as the queen of solo transatlantic races’. It’s not just about reaching the finish line – it’s about making my country, my supporters, and my partners proud. I want to be a role model, showing girls and women everywhere that they too can break barriers and achieve greatness.”

She added: “This dream would not be within reach without the unwavering support of sponsors like DFDS.”

DFDS has already backed Pamela Lee in the 2023 Transat Jacques Vabre race from France to Martinique, and is part of DFDS’ ongoing commitment to increase the number of women pursuing careers in the maritime industry.

Vice president and head of global crewing, Gemma Griffin said:   “We are determined to play our part in moving the needle and addressing the gender imbalance in the maritime industry. Supporting Pamela on this remarkable journey not only reflects this dedication but also highlights her emerging role as an ambassador for the maritime industry.  ”

The Danish owned shipping line aims to boost the number of women in deck and engine management positions to 20% by 2030 and, since 2023 has already achieved a significant increase in female employees within these roles, rising from 4,6% to 9.8% %.

DFDS connects the regions and communities that are integral to Pamela Lee’s race through key routes such as the Rosslare-Dunkirk route and links between the UK, France and Jersey. This partnership underscores its commitment to fostering diversity and innovation while strengthening the maritime traditions that shape the areas it serves.
