Irish Rail adds Mayo to freight network

[ April 3, 2023   //   ]

Iarnród Éireann (Irish Rail) is to build a multimodal freight terminal at Castlebar, County Mayo. It will provide an alternative to local manufacturers to the terminal at Ballina, 23 miles away, terminus of Ireland’s only scheduled container train, from Dublin. Castlebar is on the branch to Westport, which already handles timber traffic, one of Irish Rail’s few other regular freight flows. Irish Rail is planning to open a number of strategic freight terminals throughout the country under its Rail Freight 2040 Strategy.
